MMC 2006 Workshop

Heinrich-Hertz-Institut Berlin

19-20 October, 2006

In 2006, mobile TV is launched in Europe, Asia and the US as an attractive new service. It may drive operators' and handset manufacturers' revenues by offering pay TV like services to their customers. Nevertheless, to exploit the full potential and to open new markets, there is still one important thing missing – interactivity. Standardization work is on-going in 3GPP, WorldDAB TC and DVB-TM - but will it be accepted? Another handicap is the fragmentation of the markets due to a variety of technical solutions for mobile TV. DVB-H, DMB and MediaFLO have been optimized for mobile TV, whereas 3GPP's MBMS and 3GPP2's BCMCS claim to enable higher service flexibility and variety by built in interactivity.

European research played a fundamental role in specifying and validating DVB-CBMS, OMA, etc. It generated a collective knowledge for the European industry, the broadcasters, and network operators and service providers.

This workshop will focus on the convergence of broadcast and mobile services. It should show the potential and opportunities for interactive multimedia services and applications on mobile devices.

The workshop on Mobile Multimedia Communications will provide an international forum to discuss and give guidance to future research and standardization activities in mobile multimedia communication in a multi-radio environment. It will bring together telecommunication manufacturers, broadcast operators, cellular network operators, regulators, multimedia content providers, and R&D organizations.

The workshop will be cross-disciplinary, well focused, consisting of sessions for invited speakers and panel discussions with an amount of time devoted to discussions.
